“How you looking, Carver?”

“Decent amount of Vs. Got one forget-me-not medium missile and twenty-three interceptors.”

“Good on V rounds. Out of forget-mes and down to seventeen inters,” Ichika said. “I’ve got more interceptors printing.”

“Same. I was using them as small missiles.”

“Groundies are gonna get confused calling missiles forget-me-nots.” Ichika snorted, adjusting her altitude to let her sensors get a better picture of the ground and the friendly city.

“Well, they’re all standing there, fi ring and watching the damn thing. By the time they go off , we’re well gone.” She could hear the grin in Carver’s voice.

“Heads on, coming up on the area. Let’s split and pull a fi gure eight.”

“Copy,” Carver said.

“Mark.” Th ey broke apart, banking in a slow circle that would take them around the area and cross over one another on the opposite side of where they’d appeared.

Th e trees cleared, markers thrown up around the city. Ichika unlocked her heavy machine gun, switching to V-2s as she picked out targets, and used her fi nger balls to select or deselect a half-dozen targets, all in the time it took her to yell, “Contacts!” She unleashed her fi rst barrage of interceptors. “Adraxi attacking the city. Friendlies in the buildings fi ring back on them.”

Smoke shot out of a building’s openings as a crab round blew through it, detonating inside and hurling the upper sections of the building across the ground and collapsing what remained.

Her craft bucked as she fi red her machine gun, holding the trigger down. Th e Hellcat jerked around like she was a chew toy in a dog’s mouth.

Th ere was no grin on her face, just a blank look, as she lined up her run, adjusting fl aps, engines, thrusters, then selected targets with her left hand inside her netsuit.

Carver’s heavy cannon let rip as he came in from the other side, fl ying so close she could see him.

A wave of his interceptor’s plumes obscured him from view, hurtling off into the forest.

Th ey exploded in fl ashes of light and claps of thunder. Trees collapsed, while others were thrown back and forth. Ichika’s targets slimmed down as she cleared Carver and fi red.

“Friendlies on the ground,” she barked as tracers cut out from the side of the roughly square city.

Two squads ran through the city streets as movers bumped along the road, driving through the streets towards the fi ghting.

Two heavies’ machine guns added their fi re to those shooting along the city’s fl ank, Orkaran fi ghters joining in.

Ichika banked, using her thrusters.

“One Alpha, I need scans of the area. Th is is more than we’ve seen at other locations,” Luke said.

“Understood. Th e foliage is thick there. We’re relying on IR and shit’s hitting the trees.” Ichika worked against the wind as it continued to batter her.
